It’s Easy Being Green with the City of Columbus’ GreenSpot Program
When it comes to being environmentally-responsible, there are a variety of opportunities to do so. Whether it’s taking that extra step to recycle an aluminum can instead of throwing it away, or organizing a community clean-up day, every action can help. From residents, to businesses, to entire communities, making sustainable decisions can really add up for our environment. In that spirit, we were inspired to become a member of the City of Columbus’ GreenSpot program.
What is GreenSpot?
GreenSpot was launched in 2008 to inspire, educate, and recognize businesses, residents, and community groups in the Columbus, Ohio area who are committed to sustainable practices. Today, there are more than 16,000 members of the program. It’s a community of individuals and businesses that seek to create a more sustainable central Ohio.
Why Did IGS Energy Join GreenSpot?
As an organization, we are committed to providing innovative solutions that make a meaningful difference. We are also proud to give back to the areas where we live and work. This dual commitment prompted our Director of Building Relations & Facilities Management, Anna Sommers, to join other area organizations in participating in GreenSpot’s sustainability initiative classes*, offered over a six-month period to understand what it takes to become a GreenSpot. “We are thrilled to be part of the GreenSpot program,” said Sommers. “Not only does the initiative help keep us motivated in terms of our environmental commitment, but it also encourages the community to take an active role as well.”
Help Green Up Columbus
It’s actually easier to become a GreenSpot than you may imagine. For example, whether you own or rent, there are a variety of ways to get involved if you conserve water, energy, and reduce, reuse, recycle. GreenSpot offers great recommendations to help those just getting started on their green journey (like turning off the water while you brush your teeth), and for those who are seasoned pros (such as cleaning the coils on your refrigerator).
As a homeowner:
When you join GreenSpot you will receive a GreenSpot decal for your home, welcome letter from Mayor Ginther, a personalized electronic dashboard to log your green actions, and possibly be eligible to receive a $50 rebate on a rain barrel, compost bin, native plants or $100 on native trees.
As a business:
You can also become a GreenSpot by making a pledge to conserve and protect water, conserve energy, reduce waste, inform/engage your staff and customers, and green your transportation. When your business joins, you will be recognized via GreenSpot social media and be eligible for a GreenSpotLight award.
